Fect Appeal
The appeal to raise funds to build a home for people with leprosy in the Kodungal district is coming to a close.
Appeal letters have been sent out to many UK charities and trusts, in order to provide Janeve with the funds to be able to work with the volunteers who look after the many poor and elderly people who have leprosy.
Prior to the people being looked after by the FECT organisation (Fatima's Educational Charitable Trust) many of the people with Leprosy were homeless and existed by begging on streets as they were often shunned by society and not allowed to use local facilities such as drinking water, public transport….all based on fear and a lack of understanding from the community
It is our hope that the appeal will raise funds to provide the people with a permanent home, medical equipment and help raise awareness.

Donation made by E-Academy
This year Janeve were very fortunate to be nominated for a charitable grant being made by the E-Academy based in Ilkley.
The company who promote child protection and children's rights (through a range of innovative web based training) considered the proposal made by Jonathan Picken.
After hearing about our work in India the company agreed to support our efforts to raise awareness about children and young people's safety and well-being.
This generous donation will be used to further enable our support and training in several more districts in South India. With your support Janeve can continue to empower disadvantaged people, and through our partnerships sustainable change can be achieved.
Please remember that even very small contributions can make a very big difference!

Child Rights and Child Protection
Last year we have extended the work of Janeve to include child protection training.
We were very lucky that Jonathan Picken, chair of Bascpan (British Association for the study of child protection abuse and neglect) offered to support Janeve in this very important work.
Jonathan provided child rights training to the staff and outreach workers who are involved with The St Albans Medical Centre in Parangapetti, in South India.
The work was very well received. Jonathan is planning to extend his work further this year, by visiting the St Albans Medical Centre, the FECT project in Kodungal and also visit Child projects in Madurai.

Jungle Marathon - by Mark Britten
In October 2008 I felt privileged to compete in the 7 day 200km Jungle Marathon raising £750 for Janeve.
The race was set in the stunning State of Para in Brazil. The route followed a tributary of the Amazon, the Tapajos River. During the day competitors carrying their food and equipment were taken into the rainforest, returning at night to set up camp on the river shore.
The £750 including £250 from Severn Trent Water has been donated to Fect Kodungal to purchase a spindle machine. The machine will process cotton waste into a saleable item enabling Fect to raise money for their community. I am extremely happy my fundraising efforts helped Janeve assist this community.
During the race it was my family, running partner and Janeve who kept me focused on finishing. For that I thank you all !!!!!!!

Visiting FECT - by Wendy Picken
On arrival at the villages 'FECT' project I was given beautiful sandlewood garlands and then invited to light the prayer lamps.
Even for seasoned travellers, arriving in remote communities like Kodungal is a bit of a shock to the system! However knowing that I was there to handover monies raised by Janeve supporter Mark Brittain, made the long diversion from my costal holiday more than worth while.
During our visit we were shown into a tiny room with a concrete floor where 45 people with leprosy were living, men on one side and women on the other.
One by one people with very deformed hands and feet came to meet me. In turn they shared their plight of living with leprosy, being ostracised by their communities and having no where to live.
It was immediately clear that every rupee raised would be very well spent and that this first Janeve donation would be used for purchasing a spindle machine. This type of investment allows residents to recycle old cotton into clothes which can be sold to engineers and as importantly allows them to contribute to their and sustain FECT's development work.
It is therefore my great pleasure to announce that the Janeve Appeal 2009 is to help FECT build a permanent structure that will become home for approximately 48 homeless people living with leprosy.

2008 was a busy year for the Janeve Foundation. Several new people travelled to India to work in our projects, all of whom came back with stories to tell. Mark Britten did a jungle marathon and raised £550 for leprosy sufferers. We continue to work with St Albans medical Centre, Kidwai hospital and Madurai School, and we are forging new links with FECT, an organisation that helps leprosy sufferers.
